Fred Probst

Frederick Addison Probst, II.  Fred passed away on March 14, 2001 in Lowell, Michigan, thirteen months after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma.  Fred was a native of Youngstown, Ohio and moved to Battle Creek at a young age.  Following graduation from high school, Fred joined the Marines and served from July 1965 to July 1968.  After leaving military service, Fred attended Kellogg Community College.  He and his first wife Debbie had two children: Fred Addison, III, and Phillip Todd.  In 1981, Fred married his second wife, Sandra and became the step-father of Sandra’s son Derek. Fred’s early career involved freight sales in the trucking industry in Michigan and for a short time in South Carolina.  Always enjoying cooking, Fred’s career changed from freight sales to owning, operating, and cooking for a while at a restaurant in Clarksville, Michigan.  After divesting the business, Fred worked as a cook at several places around central lower Michigan until his illness.  Fred loved all kinds of sports.  He played football and baseball in high school.  For most of his adult life, Fred taught and played golf and tennis.  For a long time, he played softball and coached men’s, women’s, coed, and youth softball teams.  He also enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing.  Survivors included his wife Sandra; children, Frederick and Phillip; step-son Derek, six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; sister Sharon Probst; and former wife Debbie.  Fred was predeceased by his parents Fred and Mary Probst and a brother James.
