      James Welton Williamson, Jr.

James passed away on Thursday, July 6, 2023. He was a native of Brownsville, Tennessee and a resident of Battle Creek, Michigan. Following graduation from BCCHS, James attended Ferris State University, receiving his Bachelors in Education and Masters from Michigan State University. He was a Boy Scout, Eagle Scout and served as a Troop Leader for more than ten years. He served in the United States Army from February 24, 1969 to February 1, 1975, having attained the rank of Specialist Five, and received an Honorable Discharge. James united with Second Missionary Baptist Church where he was an active member. He was a member of the choir, media coordinator, and a Sunday School Teacher. He was also a Media Coordinator with Access Vision for many years. James was employed by the Springfield Public Schools, teaching at the elementary and middle school, retiring in 2003. He was known in the community as a Photographer, and was always willing to take pictures for private and public events. He was a Black Belt in the Korean Art of Tang Soo Do. James spent much time mentoring the youth in the community, in his church, and made a difference for many young people by being a Christian Roll Model and Mentor. He was the Williamson Family Historian, and was responsible for having the Black Heritage Family Crest, registered with the Library of Congress, in 1980. Survivors included James’ brother, Dwight Williamson; nephew, Dwight Williamson, II; niece, Brittney N. Williamson; and a special friend, George Crape. He was predeceased by his step-mother, Roxie Mae (Ellison) Williamson; and sister, Pauline Fakhrid-Deen.
