The first time I saw Sheila was at a dance. Some friends from SE were crashing a dance at WK; I don't remember how or why. Since Sheila was about a foot taller than me, some of my friends (I thought they were friends) said they would pay me to ask Sheila to dance with me. I always needed money and rarely turned down a dare, so I walked across the room, approached Sheila, who probably wondered who that little twerp was and what he was doing. I asked her to dance and she said "Yes." She was always too kind to be mean to anyone, even a total stranger. I think my eyes were about chest-level and at a very embarrasing viewpoint. She was being nice about the whole thing, so I decided to be straight with her. I told her about my payoff and how it came that I asked her to dance with me. We had a great laugh about it. We were instant and permanent friends!

Many years later when she was living in NYC, I contacted her. I was planning on attending a Chocolate Festival in NYC and wanted to go out to dinner with her while there. I discovered that Steve Jessup regularly visited NYC on business. We made arrangements and all 4 (including my wife, Lyn) of us went to dinner and had a great visit. After that, I met with Sheila a couple more times in NYC. She was always so much fun to be around.

A memory of Sheila Burton

This must have happened more than twenty years ago.  It's late at night, I had been up reading and decided to channel surf a few minutes before going to bed.  It was my habit to blindly punch a couple of buttons on the cable remote and see what came up.  A primitive version of "I'm feeling lucky" on Google.

The channel appeared and it was the game show channel (at that time) showing reruns of old black and white game shows.  This one was "To Tell the Truth" (see post #3) "What's Mine Line"  The important thing is that the first person I saw on the panel of two imposters and the genuine person was Sheila Burton!

I couldn't believe my eyes, remember this is ...oh 3AM ... I quickly brought up the program info, recorded in 1968-70 -three or so years after graduation.  Recorded in New York City.  I watched the whole show.

I couldn't believe it, two years after graduation, Sheila was in New York City, appearing on a national game show.  I think she said her occupation was working for a legal firm (could be wrong... it was 20+ years ago and 3AM)  Anyway, I remember thinking, have a grand life Sheila, you're off to a great start!  Of course, by then she had been living it for at least 23 years...sounds like she had a good life after all.

Sheila and I were friends at WK early on since most of my el classmates went to Northwestern.  I was one of the shortest in 7th grade and she the tallest so we made quite a sight.  We spent our lunch time in the library. She was on "To Tell the Truth" also.
